Additives & Contaminants

Contaminants

Packaging materials as well as anything that comes in contact with food in the context of production and transportation (Food Contact Materials) can be contagious and pose potential risk to the health and safety of consumers. We recognize the importance of identifying food contaminants and residues to ensure food safety. Through analytical technologies we can ensure the evaluation of compliance and detect food contaminants such as:

  • Mycotoxins
  • Acrylamide
  • Heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, As and other metals
  • PAH’s
  • Nitrosamines
  • Phthalates
  • Pesticides

Mycotoxins-Aflatoxins testing

Improper storage conditions, such as high temperature and humidity, make nuts, dried fruits and cereals prone to aflatoxin contamination. Aflatoxins constitute some of the most toxic natural substances and are extremely durable when cooled or heated. It is the duty of every producer to ensure the quality of his product and to protect the consumer. We support the efforts of all professionals in the industry by providing all the necessary services within the framework of the legal framework (Regulation (EC) No 188/2006).

  • Aflatoxins B&G (Β1, Β2, G1, G2, total) -Dried nuts & Cereals Accreditation
  • Αflatoxin Μ1 -Dairy products Accreditation
  • Ochratoxin -Wine, raisins, foods rich in sugars Accreditation
  • Patulin -Apples
  • Zearaleneone ΖΕΑ -Corn products
  • Deoxynivalenol DON -Cereals

Other products for analysis include: Dried fruits and processed products, Cereals and derivatives, Spices, Baby foods for children and infants based on cereals, Dietary foods for special medical purposes intended specifically for infants.

Additives & Impurities

Groups of consumers are sensitive to specific food impurities. Impurities may present a health hazard, gluten or cultural, swine DNA restriction. Gluten testing and detection of potentially contaminating DNA allows avoiding cross contamination and complying with food safety standards. A wide range of analytical and molecular equipment is being used. We provide the suitable tests to monitor and verify the quality of these preparations. Through thorough food testing on raw, intermediate and final foodstuffs and food supplements we ensure food quality and consumer safety in terms of additives and impurities.

  • Preservatives – Sorbic acid, Benzoic acid, Propionic acid, Natamycin, Sulfite (SO2)
  • Sugars – Fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose
  • Vitamins – A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D3, E
  • Trace elements
  • GlutenGluten free
  • Halal
  • Kosher

Our testing methodology

We use high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC, GC/MS), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, Elisa) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to determine organic trace compounds and to ensure food quality and safety. Their qualitative and quantitative determinations are crucial in the analytical process of detecting contaminants, environmental pollutants, natural toxins and chemical residues. ERGANAL analysis laboratories specialize in mycotoxin and aflatoxin testing and are constantly increasing their respective accreditation fields.
